Ocean to Idaho

Behind the Scenes: The Night Owl

There’s 15 hours of shooting light in the summer. That means I stay up late and get up early.

I only rest when the sun sets and not really even then, but I do put it in park. I climb in my camper, line up my cameras on the floor and import footage overnight while eating my camp-fancy fixings.

I don’t unleash the full mess of dinner prep and all its sauciness until the cameras are put away. By then, it’s after midnight. I eat dinner, crawl up to my bunk and pass out until first light, about four hours later.

It’s a sleepless grind, but salmon swimming from the ocean to Idaho don’t stop. Neither do I.
