Some numbers out of the Owyhees for you this week. The Owyhees straddle the Idaho-Oregon border. Same sagebrush landscape in both states, but different designations which mean different resource management styles.

Idaho’s Owyhee River Wilderness: 267,000 acres protected

Oregon’s Owyhee Canyonlands: 2.2 million acres not protected

There is a rising push to keep Oregon’s Owyhee Canyonlands intact and undeveloped by designating half of Oregon’s acres as either wilderness or monument this year. Wilderness designation takes an Act of the U.S. Congress. Monument designation bypasses Congress and is proclaimed by the President of the United States. Either could happen in 2024, but a monument would happen faster. With rising interest in renewables on public land, here’s what’s at stake according to National Wildlife Federation.
