Behind the Scenes: Detour

Unexpected detour for Ocean to Idaho rig. That’s not a dog in the crate on the back seat. It’s an osprey with an injured wing. I’m its emergency transport to Teton Raptor Center. Instructions from Idaho Fish & Game: turn the music down and the a/c up.

Confession: I got pulled over for speeding. (It’s surprisingly hard not to speed with a wild bird in the back seat.) When I told the trooper what was in the crate, he let me go with a warning. Bird didn’t make a peep. Just talons clicking on crate every once in a while.
