A new incentive in Nevada reduces the amount of trash dumped on public land, the same land where sage grouse live. Many landfills don’t accept appliances or if they do, they charge a fee. When people don’t want to pay that fee, some unload their unwanteds in what they think is the middle of nowhere, but it’s actually the desert home of wild animals.
